I dont think that we should tolerate hate speec because just as this article says it causes a lot of violence, but also it violates the first amendment because it violates the freedom we have to speak.
ReplyDeleteIt shouldn't be tolerated because it's not right and why should you want speak badly about others when you don't like it happening to you. Ya it is violating our 1st amendment rights but not being able to burn the American flag also violates that amendment. All you have to do is keep it to yourself because saying it could make it worst for you and there is no good in expressing yourself like that.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that there should be any tolerance for hate speach however this is almost like a catch 22 situation. In order to abolish hate speech you would need to limit a persons freedom of speech. Opinions are opinions, and sometimes the should be kept to yourself. We shouldn't need to limit freedom of speech because people should have at least enough respect and common decency to know what is hurtful and wrong to say. Unfourtunately in the world that's highly unlikely.
ReplyDeleteI believe that hate speech should be tolerated, in many cases these people are so extreme in there ideas that when they express them it makes them look un-intelligent. i understand that some people can be insulted by the words they use but as long as they can keep the slurs in perspective they shouldnt feel too insulted. There will always be people who hate others. I take the example of the president of Iran ad his speech at Columbia. By allowing hjm to speak it made his view almost a laughing matter. I say let people make butts of themselves. We have important rights to freedom of speech, the content is irrelevant. As long as the speech does not transfer to action it should be ok. If action is taken the we should crash down on it with solid and affirmitive action. In this way we can preserve everyones rights.
ReplyDeleteHate speeches are legal. They fall under freedom of speech. I can't speak for Irish government, but in America, south, north, or west, speaking is not illegal. The article uses racial speeches as evidence that hate speeches incite violence. This is true, but not every lynching occured after a hate speech. Furthermore, many times the police themselves were rascist and therefore people knew they could get away with lynchings, etc. The greater issue is how policemen didn't uphold the law. People would have been rascist if they had heard a vibrant angry speech or not.
ReplyDeleteThe entire notion of outlawing hate speeches is ridiculous. Who decides what hate is? Aren't they themselves, by being human, bias? What if it is a hate speech against those who favor saving the enviroment? What if the speech contains hateful messages against those that pollute the enviroment? It is much better for a nation to risk the occasional riot to ensure that Americans are heard. Peacefully assembling and speaking are lawful and necessary. The founding fathers realized that representative governments don't always meet the needs of the people. When letters to your congressman aren't enough, public arguments are necessary, as long as they aren't instructing anybody to commit crimes. Speach is legal, and it should never be otherwise, regardless of the content.
i do not think hate speech should be tolerated. I understand that freedom of speech is our constitutional right, but we also have the responsibility to not harm others. Saying something hurtful about a person, a race, a gender, a sexual orientation, etc. is not right. it shouldn't be tolerated. But I'm a bit torn on this question because where is the line between "your dumb" and the "n" word. Who gets to define the line, and how do they find it? something that could be hurtful to one person may not be hurtful to another. It could be a teenager from the middle of no where talking about how much they hate their teacher because of their race... or it could be the president talking about how much he hates one of his cabinet members because of race. (I'm pretty sure our president would know better though...haha)So who decides, and how? Again, im sticking with the no tolerance... but I'm not sure how to go about enforcing it.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion,of course hate speech should NOT be tolerated. It not only causes a lot of hurt, emotionally & sometimes physically, but it causes violence as well. In today's society, hate speech has become an everyday thing. As a high school student, I am continuously hearing hate speech; even as I walk through the school halls! This is unexceptable in no way okay. Nothing is being done about hate speech, so people have begun to think it is ok. For example, saying something like "that's so gay,"or "you're so retarded" have become ways of insultin things or people. This is totally inappropriate and in NO WAY should be tolerated. Terms such as these have become derogatory & ways of insulting people, when in fact, that is no where near what they are meant to be used for. I believe that if hate speech could be eliminated, or at the very least lessened, the crime rate in our country would be greatly decreased. In conclusion, I don't know how to go about stopping hate speech, but I without a doubt think it needs to be stopped!
ReplyDeleteI believe hate speeches should be tolerated. Some people do abuse their power of free speech by insulting other races or religion, but if we put a law on hate speech what would be its limits. What happened if you disagreed with the government? Could the government arrest you for doing a hate speech against them? Local news could only tell one sided stories. This law would give the government more power that it does not need. Some people like terrorist deserve to be hated. People today worry about being politically right because they do not want to hurt anyone’s feeling. Well get used to it. There is always someone that will hate you. They are allowed this opinion as you are allowed the opinion to hate them. If you cannot even call the swine flu the swine flu because the Jews and Muslims get offended there is something wrong. If you hear a hate speech you should just ignore it.
ReplyDeleteI don't fully believe that hate speech should be tolerated, but in the world we live in today, it has to be accepted. There are some extremist groups, like the KKK, that take their hatred of minorities way too far and have a negative influence. But at the same time, their hatred is a method that can be used to exploit their innapropriate behavior. Also, to protect freedom of speech in the first amendment of the Constitution, people do have the right to say what they want. But the main concern is at what point their opinions are legitimate and acceptable in society.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that hate speech should be tolerated. It does go against the freedom of speech in some ways. But because it hurts and causes harm to others, it should not be tolerated. Its ok to speak your mind but I believe that hate speech is too much. The way they do it is also not acceptable in society, because it harms others.
ReplyDeleteI think that hate speeches should be tolerated. It's a way of getting all opinions out into the open, even if they are not moral, to try and ban them could lead to even worse things. This may not be true in places with more dictatorial governments. You can also find out if there are more than just a few people who also believe the same thing. What could turn out to be a small group could turn into something much larger. Religious groups such as the Catholics are very powerful, so it is understandable that many people back up their "hate speeches." But religion has had a huge part in government in Europe for a long time. That’s when hate speeches start becoming dangerous, when the person speaking has considerable power over the people and the government. That is why hate speeches should be protected, but under conditions. If it starts to hurt other people's rights, is when action should be taken.
ReplyDeleteI don't think hate speeches should be tolerated. People's freedom is in jeapordy because these speeches causes violence. Even though people have their opinions, and have the right to express what they think, to an extent they can be too extreme.
ReplyDeletei think the hate speech is alright to a degree. i think everybody should be able to have an opinion to, but when you're threatning lives and telling the world that you hate someone and want to kill them for their religion or race its pretty wrong. keep that stuff for yourself.
ReplyDeletei think that hate speeches are a way of people expressing thier views, and thier beliefs. THey are using their frredom of speech by doing this. but it should only be tolorated to an exstent because what people may be saying are very wrong. when i was in washington DC this year i saw some woman protesting the nuclear bombs the only reason why she could do this is because of her right of freedom of speech. so im in the middle about hate speeches
ReplyDeleteI would say that we should tolerate them. Though I can see why the other person is so agianst it. In places where people are not very educated they will ,most of the time, go completely with something hateful without knowing everything. Though that is also true, there should also be a limit to how far a person takes it. Like murdering is going too far. Also I belive that everyone should be able to give their opinion on what they want to though it should also come to a limit. Things like mass murder (does not always have to be genocide) is going a bit to far.
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to say weather hate speeches should be tolerated or not. Our first ammendment gives us the Freedom of Speech, therefore that means people can say what they want and they are protected. However, I think that saying bad things about someones race and relgion is going too far and that some poeple need to just keep those things to themselves. The promblem is the fact that we have freedom of speech and if there was a law on hate speech how would a line be drawn. What would the permameters of that law be? It is difficult for something like that to happen.
ReplyDeleteHate speech has been around for centuries. The Jew's have been continuously discriminated against. In western civilizations people of African decent have been also discriminated. Hate speech is consistent in global history. I personally believe that hate speech should be limited. As an America, I believe we hold the right to express our views under the First Amendments as long as we stay in the boundaries. When hate speech leads to hate crimes, that is when we start to have a problem. To answer the question "should hate speech be tolerated." the answer is yes as long as it is the boundaries of the first amendment.

ReplyDeleteI think that hate speech is perfectly fine. It can be hurtful to others and it probably isn't seen by many people as being something that should really be permitted, but in the same respect, this is the United States where you are free to your own opinions. Things like genocide aren't cool, but we're only talking about words and the persecution of others by words. If those offended by hate speech have a problem with it, then they can just talk back.
ReplyDeleteI think hate speeches should be allowed. Although, if it catches on and becomes popular and people start getting hurt or killed over it, then it should be put to an end as soon as possible. Its fine to use the freedom of speech, so long as things dont get too out of hand with it.
ReplyDeleteI think that hate speech is alright to a certain extent. You should be able to voice your opinion, but to intentionally harm other people is wrong.
ReplyDeleteI think hate speech should be tolerated. You cant even say to a certain degree with this type of situation because of our own personal right to the freedom of speech. Everyone has a right to their own opinion and the right to express or state that opinion if they so choose. I do believe that some opinions should be kept to the person who holds them, unfortuantly not everyone chooses that decision. There isn't a law against hate speech and i don't think there ever should be because of our very own constitution. However i think people may just need to stop and take a second to think about what is really important in life, mainly sticking to their own life, instead of taking the time to judge others.
ReplyDeleteI think that hate speech shouldn't be tolerated. I understand people want to voice their opinions, and it's their right to do so, but there comes a point when people are jsut being ignorant with some of the things they say aloud. I feel that there is an extent as to how far you go with a hate speech. People need to view other peoples feelings instead of completely disregarding them and realize who their hurting. At least if you're going to voice youre opinion, do it in an appropriate way.
ReplyDeleteHate speech should not be tolerated at all. This is because hate speech hurts a lot of people’s feelings. As mentioned in the article it tends to make people violent. In the article it talks about how hate speech started out with reaching a few hundred people but quickly turned to thousands. Why would anyone want to spread mean things about someone around to thousands of people not to mention any size group at all? I think hate speech is unnecessary. If someone needs to talk garbage about someone then they should get a journal or something to vent. Or better yet get a counselor. So to finish this I think that hate speech leads to other bad things that shouldn’t start in the first place.
ReplyDeleteHate speech IS legal. It is immoral and wrong, but unfortunately it is illegal. Anything that goes beyond the speech is usually illegal. There is no toleration for hate speech, even though it is a right.

ReplyDeleteI think that hate speech should be tolerated because it is LEGAL. While it is digusting to hate someone based on their religion, sex, ethnicity, etc., it is a person's own choice on whether or not to make their views publicly...at least I'll know who to hate. While I beleive that the author makes a valid point of countries being in turmoil because of "hate speech", I would disagree that speech made the problem brew into what it is (Ireland, Apartheid in Africa and so forth). Words added to the flame but other things such as government, white superiority, people's interpretation of their religion, and just people in general made the problem, (not just the words). Take for instance Martin Luther King Jr. Without him making the "I have a dream speech" people would not have been so moved to join his cause for a better world without racism if it were not for his eloquent speech. Should he then have been thrown in jail for speaking his mind even though people like the KKK were highly offended because that was hate towards them. I agree with the author when he says that having free speech allows for open debate over subjects. It is educational to listen to a debate so that an individual can form their own opinions for the subject at hand. All in all I think that hate speech should be tolerated because an individual should be able to speak their mind; and it is up to a person to take what another person has to say with a grain of salt. Like Thomas Hobbes once said... "[man] has no idea of goodness he must be naturally wicked; that he is vicious because he does not know virtue".
ReplyDeleteI myself believe the hate speech should not be tolerated. Although it is legal. People should have their own opinions but keep them to theirselves. People who actually do speak their mind always end up dead or in trouble. Like John Lennon: had many different opinions about the war and many people wanted him dead. Just because someone has their own personal opinion someone should not be judged or hated because of their race, religion, sex, ect. Alot of the things they hate are things people just can't control. -Sean O'Brien
